  • Gifting Before December 31, 2012 (October 1, 2012) The law governing federal estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer (GST) taxes are scheduled to expire at the end of 2012. Currently, gifts and GSTs made prior to December 31, 2012 are subject to a lifetime exclusion amount of $5,000,000.  After the current law changes expire, estates, gifts and GSTs will be subject to a lower exclusion/exemption amount and potentially higher tax rates.
